Work done: Modern Calligraphy transferred and added to digital artwork
This piece is a merging of islamic geometry & modern calligraphy. The lines in the background are the constructions lines used to create the tiles that adorn mosques and other islamic structures. This can represent the Unseen. The modern calligraphy was created by hand, digitized and manipulated on the computer. ‘Light Upon Light’ is taken from the Quran, describing His light and how He has knowledge of all things. A light delicate pattern and a dark bold arch create a noticeable contrast. A limited colour palette of brass and dark purple further emphasize the juxtaposition of darkness and light.
I wanted to create a piece of work that explored duality, a mixture of tradition and modern. Islamic geometry traditionally created by hand but in my piece, the lines where created digitally. Calligraphy at its root, is a hand based art but in my piece, explores a modern style and also was brought into the computer for further manipulation. I was inspired by layers of faith.
This art piece was created for entry in the Narrative House competition.
