The Maha Manifesto

The Maha Manifesto

Faith

Intentional design with heart
and powered by faith.

In this digital age, where you can learn about a person by doing a quick Google search, sometimes you can’t get a complete picture of who this person is. Digital snippets of a person often portrait the highlights and gloss over the struggles. I realize that I am somewhat of a private person so writing a post like this scares me but I believe this post will help you to get to know me better. This is the Maha Manifesto.

Who I am

I’ve always been a creative minded person. Growing up in Montreal, Canada, the arts have always been a constant companion. Being able to express my creativity nourishes my soul. I pursued a baccalaureate in Film Animation at Concordia University learning about the art of animation, movement, drawing and puppets to name a few. After university, I took a job indirectly connected to the film industry. 4 years later, I lost my job. While I learned a lot during that 4 year period, in the end, I saw job loss as a relief.

With a new sense of freedom, I decided to take a 12 week course in Graphic Design to further my higher education. I genuinely enjoyed the experience and knew that this knowledge would help me in the future. With marriage on the horizon and my husband-to-be already living in the United Arab Emirates, I decided to take the plunge and move across an ocean. I’ve been living in exciting Dubai for the past 10 years and learning everyday. With opportunities on the horizons, I admit to falling into freelancing. When I chose to work on my own, this offers me the flexibility to live life on my terms. I started my own business in late 2016 and it’s a huge learning curve. (still learning!)

I’m an introvert and accepted my true nature a few years ago. Once I knew that there is nothing wrong with being an introvert (thank you Susan Cain!), I’ve become more comfortable with who I am. I’m also an INFP-T, which stands for Introverted, Intuitive, Feeling and Prospecting personality. Also, I think you can tell by my logo that my favourite colour is purple.

What I represent

I represent the ones who wish to do better in the world. Let’s face it, the past couple of years have been hard on the collective consciousness. The hustle culture that has been building up for decades is seriously being questioned since the pandemic hit. We are forced to take stock of who we are, what we really want in life and what we want to leave behind after we have left this earth. The product and services we create need to be intentional, can help to improve the lives of others and be kind to the planet. As a graphic designer, I hope to help everyday business owners have a solid visual foundation for their endeavours.

My vision & values

My faith in God is my guide throughout my life. All my actions and behaviours follows the principle of Islam, to the best of my abilities. I am very grateful to God and his creation which has changed my outlook in life. Honesty, transparency and integrity in myself and others is what I value greatly. I don’t believe in the rush, instead opting for slow growth. In fact, I was never a multitasker and prefer to be a monotasker. My introverted nature makes me cautious and careful. I don’t want to create noise for the sake of it, I want to create a gentle impact. I truly care about people and try to always be empathetic to their struggles and needs and compassionate to others. My approach to creativity has been a holistic approach. I ask a lot of meaningful questions, try to get to the heart of the project and listen with intent.

How I would like to help and empower others

I believe in partnership with like hearted people, where our values align. I believe that design should be intentional, and help solve a problem. Design has a purpose. I genuinely want to help people live up to their full potential.

The work that I hope to create for you would help reflect your true nature, is unique, resonates with your tribe, fosters cooperation, represents you and create connections with the world.

And just like that, Expo 2020 Dubai is over. I m And just like that, Expo 2020 Dubai is over.

I managed to visit the site 3 times this month. The architecture, textures and colours of Expo were truly inspiring. The venue is big with much to see and do, I barely scratched the surface.

Japan pavilion was a once in a lifetime experience, with a pavillon that is beautifully designed and a very interactive exhibit. I hope to replace this stamp in my Expo passport with the real one in my actual passport in 2025, InshAllah.

It goes without saying that the past 2 years have It goes without saying that the past 2 years have been an immense challenge for us all. We’ve been forced to confront our current lifestyle and realize that perhaps, we don’t want to do the things we are currently doing. That what we want to do with our lives matters.

I’ve had the privilege to attend The Heart of Design course twice, once at the start of the pandemic in April 2020 and the second time in September 2021. This course is unlike anything out there and has been an eye opening experience. A balance between design and spirituality, this course has certainly helped me take a step back and really think about my role as a graphic designer, how I can better align myself spiritually and most importantly to design with heart. It’s an ongoing journey and a work in progress, one that I hope to continue in 2022, InshAllah.

Please do check out @theheartofdesign for more details, the next 5 week program starts in late January 2022.

Wishing you all a Happy New Year and a peaceful 2022!

10 years. I landed in the UAE 10 years ago yesterd 10 years. I landed in the UAE 10 years ago yesterday after my honeymoon. The start of a new journey, taking a step forward on new land. I remember looking on quietly at the tall buildings, taking in the new sights that would be my new home. As I discovered the UAE, I learned that it is multi-faceted, balancing between tradition and modern. A safe country with an advanced infrastructure, tall buildings and many entertainment options. A land with a diverse ecosystem comprising of different colour sand dunes, green vegetation, serene mountains and many native animals (including my namesake the Arabian Oryx, Al Maha).

In the decade that I’ve lived here, I’ve watched the country grow and change at a rapid pace. I’ve seen how hard working and resilient the people living here are, especially in the past 22 months. Along with the country, I’ve also grown and learned so much living here and look forward to the future, InshAllah.

It’s not always easy to start in a new country and I’m so grateful that I chose the UAE as my home with my husband. Happy 50th National Day UAE! 🇦🇪 I pray for your continued success for many more years to come.
